Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin has rejected accusations of allowing a state of international isolation during his term in office.
Vigenin presented a short report on the achievements at an annual meeting in Sofia with Bulgarian ambassadors.
The outgoing Foreign Minister insisted that his policy had helped boost the insufficient bilateral dialogue with EU Member States and countries in Central and Western Europe.
Vigenin, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, boasted about his activities aimed at attracting EU aid for coping with the flow of Syrian refugees into the country.
He also emphasized the good ties with the United States and the open communication channels with Russia regardless of the crisis in Ukraine.
At the same time, he acknowledged that Bulgaria was vulnerable to potential new sanctions of the EU against Russia.
"The great challenge to the next government will be possible economic sanctions by the EU against the Russian Federation, which appear increasingly likely," Vigenin stated.
Bulgaria's outgoing Foreign Minister expressed hopes that the next government and Parliament would approve the Diplomatic Service Act changes he had proposed concerning the reduction to 10% of the quota for political appointments of external candidates for Ambassadors.
