Bulgaria's nationalist VMRO is due to vote whether to leave the coalition headed by Bulgaria without Censorship, a party headed by MEP and former journalist Nikolay Barekov.

VMRO Chairman Krasimir Karakachanov announced the decision is to be taken at an intra-party vote on Thursday.

Members will also have their say about nationalists' plans to set up a so-called "Patriotic Front" with the National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB).

The latter idea aims to create "a strong patriotic coalition which could provide an alternative at the forthcoming parliamentary elections... [and] be a factor to stand up for Bulgarian national interests," private channel bTV quoted Barekov as saying.

Bulgaria without Censorship (BWC) meanwhile declared intentions to run on its own at October 5's general elections.

Over the past hours the party has issued numerous statements to the media, citing "positions" of local BWC structures across Bulgaria insisting it should "go alone" at the vote.

Barekov had previously invited NFSB to join his coalition, but the nationalists organization perceived as alternative to parliamentary Ataka (support for which has sharply plummeted in a year) turned down the offer.

On Sunday, former BWC Deputy Chairman Angel Slavchev also announced he was quitting the party, arguing it was not controlled by Barekov, but by controversial MEP Delyan Peevski.

Commenting on the developments, the journalist-turned-politician Barekov, who has reiterated for months he is the next Bulgarian Prime Minister, threatened to withdraw from politics if "the Bulgarian media" does not grant him support.

He described the potential VMRO-NSFB grouping as "a coalition of death".
