Three police officers have been injured in the clashes that broke out Monday in the Roma district in Bulgaria's city of Stara Zagora.

The conflict between the Gendarmerie and the locals arose due to the forceful demolition of 55 illegally built houses in the city's Lozenets district.

Police officers faced a barricade of building materials and a human chain, Monday morning. Locals were adamant that they will not allow the demolition of any of the houses, some even threatened to commit suicide.

The Roma inhabitants hurled tiles at the officers, and as a result one gendarme and two police officers received minor bruises and injuries. All three have been provided medical care.

Authorities have already initiated proceedings against two locals for throwing objects at the police officers.
