Bulgaria's Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev appealed to the public to “stop the speculations and nonsense” around the Tuseday afternoon hailstorm in Sofia, reports Dnes.bg.
He said no early warning system for hailstorms existed in the world and it was impossible to implement. His comment came in response to suggestions in the media and social networks that authorities should have used the air raid sirens to warn the population about the upcoming storm.
“This is a sudden event and is not included in the early warning system,” Yovchev said.
Earlier on Thursday the deputy head of the Fire Safety and Public Protection directorate, Senior Commissar Vasil Vasilev told Nova TV that the early warning system was set up to warn of predictable events. “The hailstorm developed very quickly and it was impossible to predict the scale and impact,” he said.
According to Vasilev, the eventual sounding of the sirens would have created chaos and panic. “People would have rushed outside to save their cars and would have found themselves right in the middle of the hailstorm,” he said.
Realtime radar imagery of the Hailstorm Protection Agency from Tuesday afternoon shows that the hailstorm formed and hit within less than half an hour.
