British universities are trying to recruit more students from the EU, including Bulgaria and Romania, despite fears of defaults on loan repayments, reports The Sunday Times.

With the cap on university places to be lifted next year, Les Ebdon, the director of the Office for Fair Access, said it was obvious that universities will attempt to recruit more students from the EU.

“With the demographic decline in this country, universities will look into the EU market where there are a large number of students, with many EU graduates also realising that employment opportunities are better in this country,” Ebdon said. “Even though the cap is not yet off, we can see that the private iversities are already recruiting and reporting large numbers of students from Romania.”

A number of universities, including Bristol, Imperial College London and Manchester, are recruiting in Bulgaria and Romania.
