A Russian journalist has died in Ukraine’s Donetsk Region after being fatally wounded while on assignment.
Russia's Channel One has confirmed the death of its cameraman Anatoly Klyan in a statement published on its website.
Klyan, 68, was shot in the stomach after his film crew came under fire while filming near a Ukrainian military compound and later succumbed to his wound, the statement says.
The trip to the army unit was organized by the press service of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. Journalists were traveling in a bus with soldiers’ mothers who intended to demand that their sons return home from the service, Itar-Tass reports.
Russia's Foreign Ministry has demanded that Kiev conduct objective investigation into the death of the Channel One journalist.
“The death of a Russian journalist once again showed that Ukraine’s law enforcers do not want deescalation of the armed conflict in the east, and block an already shaky ceasefire," the foreign ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
"We demand that the Ukrainian authorities hold an impartial inquiry into this tragedy and strictly punish the culprits," the Russian Foreign Ministry stated as quoted by Voice of Russia.
This is not the first journalist to be killed in the conflict in Ukraine. A Russian correspondent and a sound engineer for Russian state television were killed by mortar fire in June, the Kyivpost reminds. An Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli and his Russian interpreter, Andrei Mironov, were killed by mortar fire near Slavyansk, on May 24, and a French photographer was injured.
