Over 3000 inmates at prisons in Greece continue their hunger strike over the poor living conditions.
The hunger strike started on Monday.
Some of the prisoners refuse to drink water, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.
The inmates are dissatisfied with the detention conditions and oppose the idea of the government to build a new maximum security prison.
The association for the protection of prisoner rights has sent a letter to the Justice Ministry in which it says that building a Guantanamo-type prison is inadmissible in an EU Member State.
The prison guards are also protesting due to the insufficient staff in overcrowded prisons.
Police tightened security around the home of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras where a group of anarchists tried to stage a demonstration against the new prison.
There have also been escalations of tension at the police department in Athens.
The Justice Ministry is trying to negotiate with the prisoners who went on hunger strike.
