Bulgaria: European Commission Urges Turkey to Push Reforms

The European Commission has urged Turkey to pursue closer dialogue with the EU in the area of fundamental rights and the rule-of-law.

"I have invited my Turkish colleagues to decisively engage with the EU in a comprehensive and credible reform process and to allow close dialogue with the Commission in the areas fundamental rights and rule of law", EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele commented, quoted by the Hurriyet Daily News.

Fuele expressed his concerns with recent corruption scandals in Turkey, as well as "the rapid adoption of legislation that has not been consulted with the EU", during a working group meeting with Turkish EU Minister Mevlut Cavosoglu and Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag. The group discussed Chapter 23 (Judiciary and Fundamental Rights) of Turkey's EU accession requirements.

"There is a chance to turn our positive agenda into tangible results and set the appropriate tone for the next progress report. It will serve a basis for the new Commission to determine how to continue EU engagement with Turkey", the Commissioner Fuele added.

During his meeting with Turkey's Constitutional Court President Hasim Kilic, Fuele commended him for safeguarding fundamental rights by cancelling the decisions to ban Youtube and Twitter.
