Orlin Todorov, former director of the anti-mafia unit in Veliko Tarnovo, has been handed a one-year suspended sentence with three years of probation and a fine of BGN 2000.

Todorov, former head of the GDBOP (Chief Directorate Combating Organized Crime) unit in Veliko Tarnovo, was found guilty of unauthorized disclosure of classified information collected through special surveillance equipment.

The Veliko Tarnovo district court acquitted him on the other charges, including disclosure of state secret, malfeasance in office and crimes against justice, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Todorov was imposed a bail of BGN 6000.

Prosecutor Valentin Valkov, who had demanded a penalty of 8 years of imprisonment for Todorov, announced on Wednesday that he would protest the suspended sentence at the Veliko Tarnovo Appellate Court.

Todorov said that he had not decided yet on appealing the sentence.

Todorov was appointed head of the local unit of GDBOP in February 2010. In April 2011, he was arrested in his office and he spent around a year in custody.

Todorov is involved in two of the three trials against former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
