Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), has shed light on his hopes to establish an alliance with Italy's 5-Star Movement in the European Parliament.

Farage said he "met [5-Star leader] Beppe Grillo last week", as he was quoted by Euronews.

“I am hoping we can do a deal with him and our group will sit bang in the middle politically of that parliament with a strong eurosceptic agenda,” he added.

Immigration and austerity are both on the agenda in UKIP and 5-Star Movement's euroskeptic rhetoric.

It is however unclear whether Farage, Grillo or any of the other leaders of anti-establishment parties, which scored overwhelming victories across Europe at last week's elections, could forge a viable alliance to become a group within the European Parliament.

Even though they would have enough MEPs (UKIP will give 24 and the Italian counterparts 17, with only 25 necessary to form a group), they do not meet a requirement that MEPs from seven states participate into the bloc to make it a separate EP entity.

Parties like Marine Le Pen's National Front, which came first in the French European Elections, have vowed not to seek alliance with Farage, who is considered by her and other euroskeptic leaders to pursue different goals.
