The Swiss government decided Thursday to keep immigration quotas for job seekers from Bulgaria and Romania until the last possible moment, May 31, 2016.

The news was reported by local daily 20 minutes, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).

The maximum transition period of 7 years, as stipulated in the freedom of movement agreement between Switzerland and the EU, expires on May 31, 2016.

The newspaper reminds that the Swiss voted in a nationwide referendum on February 9 to reintroduce quotas.

By end-2013, a total of 15 199 Bulgarians and Romanians had settled permanently in the country.

The citizens of the two countries have been subject to quota restrictions since June 1, 2009, the first year of the transition period.
