North Macedonia's President to Visit Bulgaria for the First Time
Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, will make her first official visit to Bulgaria this Friday
The Day of Bulgarian Letters, Education and Culture, May 24, Saturday, will be marked in Rome, as well.
The Bulgarian officials, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Zlatanova, will attend on May 24 the ceremony at Vatican's Basilica of San Clemente paying tribute at the grave of St Cyril, one of the missionary brothers who created the Cyrillic alphabet in the 9th century.
On May 24, Bulgaria honors St Cyril and his brother St Methodius who compiled the first alphabet suitable for Slav languages in the Middle Ages. Their alphabet found the most enthusiastic followers in medieval Bulgaria and then evolved to become the Cyrillic script that is used today in Bulgaria, Russia and a number of other countries.
This year's celebration of May 24 will mark a small breakthrough in the diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Macedonia, as the two ambassadors will attend both official ceremonies.
"The two ambassadors will attend both ceremonies, that is the Bulgarian Ambassador to Rome will attend the Macedonian ceremony, and respectively the Macedonian Ambassador to Rome will attend our ceremony. In my opinion, this a small but important step in our relations," Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin told Bulgarian National Radio.
