The heavy rains in Serbia have claimed three lives, leaving large parts of the country flooded.
Serbia's Emergency Situations HQ adopted Thursday a statement urging the Serbian government to declare state of emergency on the entire territory of Serbia due to the heavy rainfall and floods over the past few days, according to InSerbia News.
Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic made clear that the statement would be discussed at a government meeting scheduled to take place later the same day, adding that the torrential rains were an unprecedented disaster for the country.
He informed that Sabac had had a record amount of 161 liters/sqm of rain.
Belgrade and its surroundings had 140 liters/ sqm of rain in the past 24 hours, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.
Classes on Thursday were canceled in 400 schools out of a total of 1764, with most of the closed schools located in the area of ??Belgrade and Valjevo, according to Tanjug.
The western city of Valjevo and its surroundings were reported to be the worst-affected area.
More than 500 people were evacuated due to the floods, a number of roads were closed, and some 100 000 households were left without electricity.
