Thirty-four percent of Europeans have a positive image of the EU, shows the special Eurobarometer survey “Europeans 2014”, published on Monday.

This is by three percent more, compared to the Standard Autumn Eurobarometer from November 2013.

At the same time 26% of Europeans have a negative image of the EU.

The Special Eurobarometer is based on a representative sample of people from all 28 EU member states. In total almost 28 000 citizens aged 15 and older were interviewed between 15 and 24 March 2014.

Optimism with regard to economic outlook is also increasing, shows the survey – the majority of citizens in 20 of the 28 member states say they expect the economic situation in their country to improve in the coming 12 months.

There has been a 5% rise in the number of citizens who think the economic situation in their home country will be better or the same in the coming twelve months, which is matched by a sharp decline in the pessimism regarding economic expectations.

Trust towards the EU is also on the rise, shows the survey. It is 32%, (1% more than the survey from November 2013) and continues to be above trust towards national parliaments (27%, - a drop of 2%) and the national government (26%). At the same time over half of Europeans (53%) say that they are positive about the future of the EU.
