A new 10-year agreement will grant the US military greater access to bases across the Philippines except the right to bring nuclear weapons there.

The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement would give US forces temporary access to selected military camps and allow them to pre-position fighter jets and ships.

These provisions are included in the new military cooperation treaty between the two countries which was signed on 28 April in Manila within the framework of the official visit of US President Barack Obama to Manila, according to international media reports.

The new document is of general nature, and the amounts, characteristics and conditions of US troops deployment are to be negotiated in the course of further consultations.

Recently, American special units were temporarily sent to southern Philippines, where they provided support to national troops in raids against separatists and terrorist amid the conflict between the Philippines and China over disputable areas in the South China Sea.
