Childhood obesity rates are on the rise due to unhealthy diet and lack of enough movement, according to a survey of dietary and nutritional status of students in Bulgaria.

Only 20-36 % of girls and 37-47% of boys engage in any sport activities for at least one hour a day. On average 40% of the kids spend more than five hours daily in front of the laptop or TV, BGNES reports.

The countrywide survey showed that only 20.2% of adolescents between 7 and 18 years consume whole foods and snacks on a regular basis. About 50% of the polled eat fruits and vegetables, and dairy products regularly. Instead, children prefer sandwiches, pizzas and soft drinks.

The unhealthy diet leads to overweight and obesity, which may trigger many diseases, Prof. Veselka Duleva, national consultant in nutrition and dietetics explained.
