Russia's consumer rights agency announced Monday it is to impose a ban on import of Ukrainian milk products from six regions of the country.

Officials by Rospotrebnadzor said that the goods do not meet regulations of fatty acid composition, as well as those of total protein and fat percentage, as the watchdog reported in a press release.

On April 2, Ukraine's counterpart agency adopted similar measures toward Russian dairy production, after declaring some of it did not comply with the country's legislation.

Bilateral trade relations worsened in the summer of 2013, well before the standoff which followed the ousting of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Crimea's incorporation into Russia.

In July that year, the import of pastry from Ukrainian concern Roshen was banned by Rospotrebnadzor, which claimed the product contained a cancerogenous substance.

The decision was however applied only for Ukrainian factories of Roshen and not to those operating within Russia.

Nevertheless, the latest move by Rospodrebnadzor comes amid increased tensions between the two countries over the secession of Crimea and pro-Russian activism to Ukraine's east.
