Hospitals have run up debts of over BGN 0.5 B since the beginning of the term in office of the current socialist-led government, according to Bulgarian Health Minister Tanya Andreeva.

In a Sunday interview, Andreeva noted that the Health Ministry had requested for a second year in a row that the receipts from excise duty on cigarettes and alcohol be injected into the healthcare system but the money had kept going to the state budget.

Andreeva, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), claimed that the measure would result in a significant increase in healthcare funding.

She explained that the Health Ministry would propose legal changes stipulating that medically uninsured persons who were not socially underprivileged and still wanted to have their medical services covered by the National Health Insurance Fund had to pay all unpaid healthcare insurance installments since 2000 to restore their rights as medically insured persons.

Andreeva reminded that the current legislation required the payment of all missed healthcare installments for a period of three years back in such cases.

She made clear that the proposed changes were yet to be discussed.

Bulgaria's Health Minister informed that there were about 150 000 medically uninsured Bulgarians who were not socially underprivileged.
