Illiteracy in Bulgaria creates serious problems in communication between employers and those seeking employment.
According to the head of the Employment Agency Asen Angelov, 180 000 of the 401 000 unemployed in Bulgaria have elementary education or no education at all. “Have in mind that a large part of them are illiterate,” Angelov said at a conference on education and business in Sofia.
“An educated person will always find a job,” he said. “But this cannot be said of the uneducated. Economy doesn't need only highly-educated specialists, but those with secondary education and skilled workers. But there is a problem when the highly-educated take the jobs of those with lesser education.”
According to Angelov, the main reason for the fact that both the new jobs and the unemployment grow, is that employers have ever increasing requirements for their workers. On the other hand, those looking for jobs have either outdated qualifications or do not cover the requirements.
According to the experts, gathered at the conference, the solution is a reform in the education system and the introduction of learning through practical experience.
