Serbia is purchasing 12 new Rafale fighter jets from France in a deal valued at 2.7 billion euros
Vojislav Kostunica, former president of the FRY and Serbian Prime Minister from two terms, has decided to withdraw from the political arena after the election failure.
The Democratic Party (DSS) founded in 1992 has suffered a blow with around 6% support at the early votes on Sunday. The ruling Progressive party has won nearly 49% of the vote, and their coalition partners, Prime Minister Ivica Dacic's Socialist Party, are currently second with 15 %.
Until the new election assembly, the party will be managed by Aleksandar Popovic, vice president of DSS, who was also the candidate for the mayor of Belgrade, the Serbian Inserbia reports.
The snap elections will be the first time one party has won majority in Parliament in Serbia's democratic history.
Alexander Vucic, leader of the Progressive Party has promised to implement economic reforms, to fight corruption, to lead Serbia through EU negotiations, and to deepen the ongoing normalization of relations with Kosovo.
However, he has been widely criticized by some as he was once a minister in former President Slobodan Milosevic's cabinet.
