Uli Hoeness, President of German and European football champions Bayern Munich, has been sentenced to 3.5 years in jail for tax evasion.

Hoeness was initially charged with concealing EUR 3.5 M worth of taxes, but later admitted to a much larger sum of EUR 15 M. The final equation amounted to EUR 27.2 M that he owes, according to the BBC.

The court in Munich found the 62-year-old guilty of seven serious counts of tax evasion. Initially, the prosecution had called for a 5.5 year jail sentence.

Hoeness and his defence have a week to appeal the verdict.
