Marshal Mohammed Fahim Qassim, one of Afghanistan's two vice presidents, has died at the age of 57.

According to a government spokesperson, as cited by the BBC News, Marshal Fahim died of natural causes.

The Afghan government has requested a three-day mourning period, during which flags will be flown at half-mast.

Fahim was part of the alliance that ousted the Taliban in 2001 and served first as defence minister, before becoming vice president in November 2009, when Hamid Karzai started his second term in office as president.

According to reports of Al Jazeera, Fahim survived several assassination attempts, the most recent in 2009.
