British director Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" won best picture at the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday.

The historical drama landed two more Oscars, including best supporting actress for newcomer Lupita Nyong'o and best adapted screenplay based on the memoir of Solomon Northup.

Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" dominated the 86th Academy Awards ceremony, taking home seven trophies, including best director, best film editing, best visual effects, best cinematography, best sound mixing, best sound editing, and best original score.

The "Dallas Buyers Club" of Canadian director Jean-Marc Vall?e won three Oscars, including best lead actor for Matthew McConaughey, best supporting actor for Jared Leto, best makeup and hairstyling for Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews.

Australian Cate Blanchett won her second Oscar, winning best actress for her performance in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine", beating Judi Dench ("Philomena"), Meryl Streep ("August: Osage County"), Amy Adams ("American Hustle"), and Sandra Bullock ("Gravity").

The best foreign language film award went to "The Great Beauty" of Italian director Paolo Sorentino.

"The Great Gatsby" of Australian director Baz Luhrmann picked up two Oscars, including best costume design and best production design.

Spike Jonze, director and writer of 'Her,' won an Oscar for best original screenplay.

"Frozen," by the Disney Animation Studios, scored two Oscars, including best animated feature film and best original song, "Let It Go", performed by star Idina Menzel.

The 86th annual Academy Awards,held at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre, was broadcast live in 225 countries across the world. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Ellen DeGeners.

There were In Memoriam tributes for James Gandolfini, Peter O'Toole, Paul Walker, Annette Funicello, Sid Caesar, Roger Ebert, Shirley Temple, Joan Fontaine, Juanita Moore, Harold Ramis, Eleanor Parker, Julie Harris and Maximilian Schell.
