Todor Kodzheykov, head of Bulgaria's National Security Service (NSO), and his deputy, Kalin Ivanov, have resigned.

According to unconfirmed reports of Sega daily, Kodzheykov handed in his resignation on Wednesday.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, to whom Kodzheykov is answerable by law, confirmed the reports about his resignation, stressing that the motives behnd the decision had been strictly personal.

The reshuffle at NSO was outlined at the beginning of 2014, when it was announced that the National Security Act would be amended, alongside changes to the National Security Service Act and the National Investigative Service Act, so that the two units would be brought under the control of the executive branch and their directors would be replaced.

The current directors of the two services were appointed during the term in office of the center-right GERB government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
