European Parliament Passes Law to Restrict Cash Payments to €10,000
The European Parliament has voted to impose a €10,000 limit on cash payments within the European Union
The UK has presented a new set of rules to curb immigration from other EU countries and their access to its social benefit system.
The fresh restrictions are due to come into force on March 1 this year.
"Minimal income" will be the key concept to evaluate whether a person that works in the UK has the right to take advantage of the range of social services.
According to these new rules, a weekly salary of GBP 150 will be the minimum earnings threshold required in order to qualify someone as a "worker". This would unlock the access to child benefits, child tax credit, and housing benefit.
A lower income would mean that the person should remain subject to evaluation and have restricted access to these services.
The British government hopes that the amendments will put an end to the use of the loophole in law with allows EU citizens to claim thousands of pounds of benefits each week.
The new set of regulations are being introduced amid fears of thousands of Bulgarian and Romanian workers flocking to Britain after a transitional period banning free movement ended on January 1 this year.
They are extended not only to the EU, but to the European Economic Area as a whole.
