At least 25 people were killed last night in Kiev in clashes between anti-government forces and riot police.

241 were taken to hospital, including 79 police officers and five journalists, according to reports of Ukraine's Health Ministry, as cited by the BGNES news agency.

There is one journalist among the victims, according to the Vesti newspaper.

The reporter died in hospital of gunshot wounds after masked men assaulted him on his way home, some 800 away from Independence square.

Street unrest in Kiev, now in its third month, was reignited on Tuesday, when the opposition demanded the return of the parliamentary-presidential form of government and a reinstatement of the Constitution from 2004.

The protests began in late November after President Viktor Yanukovych rejected a trade deal with the EU and turned to Russia for financial help.
