Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Waters has made an attempt to assuage recent fears of further destruction of the little that is remaining from the wild sea coast.
Speaking before Nova TV Tuesday, Deputy Minister, Chavdar Georgiev, said facilities with only 20 000 beds will be built, not the rumored 75 000.
He further rejected demands of eco activists to have a new environmental impact assessment of the area in question – the Strandzha Nature Park on the southern Black Sea coast.
"There is no legal ground for a new assessment as it has been already done in 2008 and provides all needed measures for protection of the Park and its species. The Supreme Administrative Court (VAS) had its say and rule," said Georgiev.
Fears of turning parts of the Park into concrete towns, as is now the rest of Black Sea coast, flared after a recent rule of a VAS 5-judge panel, endorsing the general development plan of Tsarevo municipality. This gives green light to construction on the southern coast from the village of Varvara all the way down to the Turkish border even though it is a protected area of Strandzha Park.
The above overruled the decision of a 3-member panel of VAS which declared the urban plan illegal after a 5-year-long court battle of Bulgarian environmentalists.
The case against the general development plan of Tsarevo was filed in 2008 by the Association of Parks in Bulgaria and endured a number of twists, ending in the recent VAS decision.
Protests against the latest rule and plans of the Socialist-endorsed government to allow construction in the Nature Park are going to be staged Tuesday in the capital Sofia and the cities of Plovdiv, Ruse, and Burgas.
