The scandal with Bulgaria's nationalist leader Volen Siderov was brought up in Wednesday's plenary session of the European Parliament.

"I would like to condemn this unworthy behavior of a politician, and to express my astonishment that it was not condemned by the Bulgarian government", stated Jean-Pierre Audy, President of the French delegation of the European People's Party (EPP).

Audy made a similar official statement last week, becoming the first European politician to openly remark on the scandal.

In the beginning of last week, Siderov was involved in an airport row where he verbally assaulted a French cultural attach? during a Sofia-Varna flight and later attacked a passenger and a police officer in a Varna airport shuttle bus.

As a result, Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor has asked for the removal of Siderov's MP immunity. The ruling Socialist Party (BSP) have refrained from making an official statement of condemnation.

"Ataka is allowing itself such disgraceful behavior, because they play a key role in assuring the majority of the current government", stated a center-right GERB MEP, Andrey Kovachev.

Shortly after the incident, the French Embassy in Bulgaria came out with a statement reproaching Siderov's actions and requesting an apology.

In his typical tone, the nationalist responded by saying that it was not him, but the French diplomat, who owes an apology. Ataka have blamed the incident on a foreign plot, targeted at crushing the party.
