Bulgaria's 2013 Annual Average Inflation at 0.9%, Lowest in 18 Years

The annual average inflation in 2013, measured by consumer price index (CPI), stood at 0.9%, the lowest point since 1995, according to Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute (NSI).

The consumer price index in December 2013 compared to November 2013 was 100.3%, i.e. the monthly inflation was 0.3%.

The annual inflation in December 2013 compared to December 2012 was -1.6%.

The annual average inflation in the period January – December 2013, compared to the period January – December 2012, amounted to 0.9%.

In December 2013, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages remained unchanged from the previous month, prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco went up by 0.3%, prices of clothing and footwear fell by 0.3%, prices of housing (rentals, maintenance and repair), water, electricity, gas and other fuels registered an increase by 0.1%, prices of furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house remained unchanged from November 2013, prices in the sphere of health went up by 0.1%, prices in the sphere of transport added 1.1%, prices in the sphere of communications decreased by 0.2%, prices in the sphere of recreation and culture increased by 3.4%, prices in the sphere of education remained unchanged from the previous month, prices at restaurants and hotels added 0.4%, and prices of miscellaneous goods and services increased by 0.1%.

The harmonized index of consumer prices in December 2013 compared to November 2013 was 100.4%, i.e. the monthly inflation was 0.4%. The annual inflation in December 2013 compared to December 2012 was -0.9%.

The annual average inflation, measured by HICP, in the last 12 months (January - December 2013) compared to the previous 12 months (January - December 2012) was 0.4%.

In terms of HICP, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages remained unchanged from November 2013, prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 0.2%, prices of clothing and footwear fell by 0.3%, prices of housing (rentals, maintenance and repair), water, electricity, gas and other fuels remained unchanged on a monthly basis, prices of furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house decreased by 0.3%, prices in the sphere of health remained unchanged from November 2013, prices in the sphere of transport went up by 1%, prices in the sphere of communications fell by 0.3%, prices in the sphere of recreation and culture added 1.5%, prices in the sphere of education remained unchanged, prices at restaurants and hotels increased by 2%, prices of miscellaneous goods and services went up by 0.1%.

The price index of a small basket in December 2013 compared to November 2013 was 100.3% and the overall decrease since the beginning of the year (December 2013 compared to December 2012) was 97.4%.

In December 2013, compared to November 2013, prices of goods and services in the small basket for the 20% households with the lowest income changed as follows: • Food products - an increase of 0.4%; • Non-food products - an increase of 0.2%; • Services - an increase of 0.1%.
