Bulgaria’s capital Sofia was buzzing with excitement on Monday as two brand new tram cars started serving the city.

Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Environment Minister Iskra Mihaylova attended an official ceremony marking the launch of the new tram cars that will initially serve passengers on Line 1.

A total of four modern tram cars, made in Poland, have been delivered to the Bulgarian capital so far. Sixteen more are expected to arrive by the end of May 2014.

The tramcars meet all modern European standards and are energy efficient. They also have low-floors and platforms, which will facilitate mothers with strollers and people in wheelchairs.

The purchase of the 20 Polish tram cars was financed by EU’s Operational Program "Environment."
