Turkish Ruling AKP Suffers MP Defections amid Corruption Scandal

World | December 27, 2013, Friday // 14:05

Three MPs from ruling Turkish AKP have filed their resignation from the party Friday in the wake of a major corruption scandal that has shaken the cabinet of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"All rationally thinking AKP MPs had to face the parliamentary group's disciplinary committee Thursday evening. We have decided to part ways," said MP Ertugrul Gunay, quoted by the Milliet daily.

"We are not severing ties with the comrades with whom we worked with. We are interrupting communication with arrogant people in the party," added he.

Since the beginning of December, a total of five AKP MPs have left the party.

Although the development does not threaten AKP's stable majority, it suggests of rifts forming in forces supporting embattled PM Erdogan.
