A total of 52 journalists have been killed in 2013 compared to 73 last year.

The civil war in Syria has claimed 126,000 victims since March 2011, making it the most dangerous country for journalists for the second year in a row.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 21 reporters have been killed in Syria since January.

Six journalists were killed this year in Egypt, five in Pakistan, four in Somalia, three in Brazil and Iraq, two in Mali and Russia. Turkey, Bangladesh, Colombia, the Philippines, India and Libya have witnessed the death of one journalist each.

Turkey, Iran, and China accounted for more than half of all journalists imprisoned worldwide in 2013, the CPJ has found.

In its annual census, CPJ identified 211 journalists imprisoned for their work, which makes 2013 the second worst year on record after 2012, when 232 journalists were put behind bars.

CPJ has sent letters expressing its serious concerns to each country that has imprisoned a journalist.

In the past year, the committee advocacy led to the early release of at least 39 imprisoned journalists worldwide.
