Protesters in Kiev gathered Tuesday evening to express their anger at President Viktor Yanukovych’s visit to Moscow.

They demand to know what Yanukovych offered in return for Russia’s plan to buy USD 15 B of Ukrainian government bonds and cut prices for natural gas.

“He (Yanukovych) has given up Ukraine’s national interests, given up independence. He used our country as collateral. We want to know what exactly he put up as collateral, and his reasons for doing it”, stated opposition leader Vitali Klitschko, quoted by the BBC.

Although details of the agreement between Yanukovych and Putin are not clear, another opposition leader, Oleg Tagnybok believes the President has “pawned whole sectors of the country’s economy to Russia”.

Ukraine’s pro-EU demonstrations have been going on for nearly a month, and despite below freezing temperatures in the country, the central squares of Kiev continue to attract tens of thousands of people.
