Kiev Mayor Olexander Popov and the Deputy Chief of Ukraine's Security Council Volodymyr Syvkovych have been suspended over the brutal crackdown of a protest on November 30.

According to a media statement of the administration of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, the decision was taken at the request of Ukraine's Prosecutor-General over suspicions that the two breached the constitutional rights of citizens.

Earlier on Saturday, Ukraine's Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka said at a press conference that he suspected that the two had exceeded their authority by ordering the chief of police in Kiev to use violence against the demonstrators.

He added that the two officials would very soon be imposed a remand measure of house arrest, according to reports of the BGNES news agency.

On the night of November 30, riot police violently dispersed a pro-EU rally on Kiev's Independence Square, leaving scores of injured, many of them students.

Ukrainians protested against the decision of Yanukovych to back out of a strategic deal with the EU and seek closer ties with Moscow instead.

In its Saturday statement, the administration of Yanukovych expressed hope that the prosecuting authority would conduct an objective and comprehensive investigation.

"No public official in the country should be exempted from taking responsibility for illegal actions," the statement said.
