Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych will be sending a delegation to Brussels to discuss the stalled European integration of the country.
This was announced Tuesday during an emergency meeting bringing together Yanukovych with predecessors Viktor Yushchenko, Leonid Kuchma and Leonid Kravchuk.
The delegation will be presided by Vice-PM Serhiy Arbuzov, said the Ukrainian President, as reported by RIA Novosti.
The meeting comes in the wake of weeks-long rallies, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, which came out to protest the Ukrainian government's decision not to sign an Association Agreement with the EU end of November.
While Ukraine's leaders have said they intend to pursue EU integration, but need to negotiate better economic conditions for the treaty, opposition parties and protesters have expressed fears that their country might be turning backs on Europe and getting into the ever closer - and allegedly detrimental - grip of Russia.
According to Ukraine's first President after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Leonid Kravchuk, the country might sign the Association Agreement "by March," if a compromise is found.
Tuesday EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland both flew to Kiev to talk to political actors and try to facilitate internal consensus in an increasingly confrontational political and social situation.
