Former South African president Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95, according to South African President Jacob Zuma.

Zuma announced his death in a televised address to the nation late on Thursday.

Mandela battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

Mandela, South Africa's first black president, led the country's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison, the BBC News reminds.

In 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in ending apartheid without violence.

He was President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997 and Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.
