A Syrian citizen has attacked a shopkeeper in the Bulgarian capital Sofia Monday night.

The attacker has been fended off by another customer inside the store, the public radio, BNR, informs.

The 34 -year-old Syrian has been taken into custody to the 5th Police Precinct. He has a temporary resident permit. His motive for the attack remains unclear, but it is assumed that it was robbery.

The man had USD 2 000 on him during the arrest and had not offered explanations about the origin of the money.

Meanwhile, the police in Sofia informed that a second person has been arrested for the brutal beating of two Syrians and a Lebanese national on Slivnitsa Blvd in Sofia on Sunday night.

All three victims have refugee status. They were attacked by a dozen strangers at a fast food restaurant. The assailants beat the refugees and robbed them of money and documents.

Police assuage fears of further tensions, saying they have beefed up patrols in downtown Sofia.
