The Ukrainian Embassy in the Bulgarian capital Sofia refused any comment regarding the events in their country and the mass pro-EU protests.

Novinite.bg and Novinite.com made several unsuccessful attempts to contact diplomats at the mission to find out their position on the rallies that have been shaking Ukraine for over a week now.

When a Novinite.bg journalist finally reached someone on the phone Monday, he was told the Embassy was not commenting on the protests.

Thousands of citizens and university students have been staging mass rallies for over a week in the Ukrainian capital Kiev against their President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign the Association Agreement with the EU.

Rallies have been reported in the cities of Odessa and Lvov as well.

The signing of the association agreement was set for November 29 in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

On the backdrop of violent clashes between riot police and demonstrators in Kiev, the Council of Europe urged all parties in the country to start a dialogue for truce to be mediated by the Council.

Earlier Monday, Ukraine's ruling Party of Regions group at the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) announced it was ready to discuss the situation in the country with the opposition and pro-EU civil activists protesting in downtown Kiev.

Meanwhile, Yanukovych has stated that he was ready to back the resignation of the government if the Rada votes to approve it.
