Ukraine’s Parliament will hold an emergency sitting Tuesday in order to discuss the ongoing mass pro-European protests in the country.

"At a session of the Verkhovna Rada tomorrow we will consider the current and future situation in the country," parliament speaker Volodymyr Rybak told reporters on Monday, as cited by Kyiv Post.

He also noted that the question of the government's resignation would be considered on Tuesday, as demanded by the opposition.

Rybak said that he would submit "the question [about a vote of no-confidence in the government] for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada”, adding that “there are rules of procedure, and there is the law."

The move follows President Viktor Yanukovich’s controversial decision to back out of a crucial EU integration agreement.

Ukraine made the decision on the EU deal over a week ago, saying it could not afford to break ties with Moscow. Russia is trying to bring the country nto its own customs union.

Protesters in the Ukrainian capital erected barricades early Monday morning after a weekend of violent clashes between police and demonstrators.

Tensions are simmering in the former Soviet nation amid increasingly vocal calls for the ouster of Yanukovich.
