A general strike has been scheduled for Monday in Ukraine’s region of Lviv.

The move follows President Viktor Yanukovich’s controversial decision to back out of a crucial EU integration agreement.

"By supporting an appeal by the National Resistance Headquarters, the Lviv Region Coordinating Council's head office has announced a regional strike," the Lviv Regional Council has announced, as cited by Kyiv Post.

Employees of every company or organization should decide on the form of the strike on their own and join the Lviv Euromaidan protest rally, the Regional Council said.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Prime Minister Mykola Azarov stated on Monday that question of introducing a state of emergency in the country has not been discussed so far.

Protesters in the Ukrainian capital erected barricades early Monday morning after a weekend of violent clashes between police and demonstrators.

Tensions are simmering in the former Soviet nation amid increasingly vocal calls for the ouster of Yanukovich.
