Bulgaria’s government believes the refugee situation in the country will be put under control “within several weeks.”

Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev and Defense Minister Angel Naydenov visited the village of Golyam Dervent near Bulgaria’s border with Turkey on Thursday.

They were both positive that the refugee crisis is to be resolved in the very near future.
“As a result of the measures we have undertaken, the influx of illegal immigrants has decreased significantly,” Yovchev told reporters.

He pointed out that not a single asylum-seeker has entered the country illegally over the last 24 hours.

Naydenov reiterated that the army would finish the construction of a 30 km-long fence on part of the country’s border with Turkey as soon as possible.

Bulgaria is the gateway to the European Union for refugees fleeing Syria via Turkey, many crossing the border illegally. However, along with asylum seekers from Syria, a large number of people from North Africa and the Middle East have also arrived illegally through the southern border with Turkey.
