How does Russia assess Ukraine making a U-turn regarding its EU future, was just one of the many questions with which Novinite.bg and Novinite.com tried to approach the Russian Embassy in Sofia.

Other questions included: was this "gesture" towards Ukraine's most important trading partner only tactical as Prime Minister Mykola Azarov insists; if Ukraine continue talks with the EU, how it will affect trade with Russia and how the Russian side weighs recent events in Kiev?

Unfortunately, Novinite did not find anyone willing to engage with commentary on the current situation in the Ukrainian capital and preceding events.

Ukraine made the decision on the EU deal last week, saying it could not afford to break ties with Moscow. Russia is trying to bring Kiev into its own customs union.

Several rallies in Kiev and other cities have been held over the last few days, but Sunday's has been the largest so far.

In a sign that Ukraine's government may be backtracking on the EU treaty debacle, Azarov said Monday that the country might sign the agreement at an EU-Ukraine summit early next year.
