The Sofia Municipal Council approved the declaration against the closure of central parts of the city by police due to continuing protests.

The municipal councilors voted in favour of the declaration, which was submitted by the opposition GERB party’s Malina Edreva, reported the Focus Information Agency.

The declaration states that the high concentration of police personnel in a single area, and the blockade of large public spaces are not only against Bulgarian law, but also impeding to citizens’ freedom of movement.

It concludes by saying that “introducing a police regime in the center of the capital with the sole aim of keeping in power one party is unacceptable and unjustifiable”.

The declaration follows to be submitted to the Chief Prosecutor.

Over the past months, Sofia's center has been frequently closed for traffic, due to ongoing anti-government protests.
