Residents of Telish vow to continue to protest until the Bulgarian Government decides to abandon plans for a refugee shelter in the village, accuse the government of lying.
Friday, November 15 marks the deadline that protesting residents of north-western Bulgarian village of Telish had set for the government for ceasing all preparations for an opening of a refugee shelter in the village, informs BNR.
Local residents threaten with civil disobedience if the government does not cancel its decision for the opening of a refugee shelter of a closed type in the ex-military base in the village.
“We are continuing with our protest as it is obvious to us that the government has not abandoned its plan to open a refugee shelter in the former military base in Telish, it had only stopped construction work temporary, but the equipment is still in the area of the base”, said Petya Mitrashkova, speaker of the protesters for BNR.
“When we met Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev on November 5th he said to us that he is not aware of the capacity of the proposed shelter and how many people would be accommodated in it, but that was an absolute lie, because only two days after our meeting the website of the Interior Ministry had published an official information on the matter, according to which the planned refugee shelter in Telish will be with a capacity of 4000 beds, that will be reached by March 2014”, said Mitrashkova, as cited by BNR.
It sounds ridiculous that 4000 refugees could be housed in Telish, considering the fact that the population of the village is of 900 residents, added the representative of the protesters, reports BNR.
“We are not against the refugees who really need humanitarian aid, but we are against the Bulgarian government’s incompetence, the fact that any of the government officials that we have met with was not capable of informing us in details about the planned shelter is unacceptable”, pointed out Mitrashkova, as cited by BNR.
Local residents of Telish have been protesting daily against the Bulgarian government’s plan for the opening of a refugee shelter of a closed type in the ex-military base in Telish since the beginning of November when the plan was announced.
