Recalled Bulgarian Ambassador to Brazil, Chavdar Nikolov, has sent an open letter to media in which he rejects the grounds for his removal from office over the scandal "Boevski."

"I never imagined turning to Bulgarians through the media, but I have been left without a choice," is how the letter, addressed to Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin, begins.

Nikolov stresses that his arguments and explanations in the case "Boevski" have not been taken into account and have not been made public.

According to the diplomat, the imposed disciplinary sanctions aim to shift the focus from the real problem, namely, why Galabin Boevski and many other Bulgarian nationals, convicted of drug trafficking abroad, are returning to their country as free citizens before the end of their sentences.

Nikolov accuses the government of lack of legislature that would allow Bulgaria to continue to prosecute people like Boevski.

The diplomat firmly rejects accusations he failed to inform the Bulgarian authorities about Boevski's return to Sofia. The former Ambassador to Brazil says he is taking adequate steps to protect his reputation.

On November 6, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry announced it will terminate the mission of its Ambassador to Brazil Chavdar Nikolov over the case with Olympic weightlifting champion Galabin Boevski.

Ambassador Nikolov was urgently summoned back to Bulgaria on October 25, for explanations about the release of Boevski from a Brazilian jail, where he was serving a 9 year and 4 month sentence for drug trafficking.

The Ambassador was recalled for breach of duties and undermining the prestige of the diplomatic services.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Nikolov had failed to notify them in time about the release of Boevski, as well as the motives behind it. There had also been a lack of communication on the issue between the Embassy in Brazil and the Foreign Ministry.

The former weightlifter, who was detained in Sao Paulo in 2011, returned to Bulgaria recently, without any official details being released.
