Renowned Bulgarian Author Alek Popov Dies at 58
The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has announced the passing of acclaimed Bulgarian writer Alek Popov at the age of 58
Bulgarian national team captain Ivelin Popov's club team jersey will be placed in the UEFA Museum of Football in Nyon, Switzerland.
The reason for this is that Popov scored the first ever goal in a European club competition for his Russian team Kuban Krasnodar. This happened in the first leg of the 3rd qualification round for Europa League against Scottish side Motherwell, which Kuban won by 2:0.
"This is a great recognition for me and for Bulgarian football as a whole. I am very proud. This shows that when you work hard, the results will show it sooner or later", commented Popov for the daily 24 Chasa.
"I often get stopped on the streets and people tell me they will never forget what I have done for the club", added the Bulgarian striker.
Kuban are in last place in their Europa League group after 4 rounds and with very slim chances of progressing to the next stage. Nonetheless, their participation in the tournament is seen as a success in itself.
