The act naming an intersection in Washington, DC after WW II era Bulgarian MP Dimitar Peshev has entered into force.

The intesection of 22nd St. and R St. nearby the Bulgarian embassy to the US will be named Dimitar Peshev Plaza, with an official ceremony to take place next Tuesday, announced local authorities.

Peshev, along with a group of other MPs back in early 1943, was pivotal in mounting a successful political and civic opposition towards plans to deport Bulgaria's Jews to death camps in Nazi Germany.

Initially, there was reluctance to name the intersection after the Bulgarian, following an opinion from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, which pointed out that after all Bulgaria was an ally of Germany during WW II, and that it moreover failed to prevent the deportation of Jews from territories in neighboring Greece and Yugoslavia which were occupied by the Bulgarian army.

Over the summer however, the Washington, DC town hall eventually adopted an act to name the location after Dimitar Peshev.

The idea was first initiated by a US citizen of Jewish origin, who had visited Bulgaria and learned about the Peshev's role in the rescue of Bulgarian Jews.
