Anti-government protesters have blocked traffic at the intersection of the Vasil Levski Blvd and the Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd in front of the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohriski".
On the 135th day of protests against the Bulgarian government, around 100 people blocked one of the busiest crossings in downtown Sofia.
The protesters chanted "Resign", carrying posters in support of the students behind the "occupy"-event and waving Bulgarian flags, according to reports of Darik radio.
Police cars arrived at the site immediately.
By 7.30 pm, the number of demonstrators grew to around 300-400, with one group remaining in front of the Sofia University and one group booing the Parliament building.
Earlier on Saturday, Sofia University students declared a permanent occupation of the central university building, stating that its doors would remain locked until the resignation of the socialist-led coalition government and of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski and the dissolution of Parliament.
The students suggested in social media statements that the starting point of the traditional anti-government rally could be changed to the site in front of the Sofia University, adding that this would show appreciation for their cause.
The initiators of the blockade, as cited by the Focus news agency, said that they would block lectures "for a week or two, or as long as necessary."
