According to data of Bulgaria's Agricultural Ministry, the country's orchard area dropped by 18% in 2012 compared to 2011.

Cherry orchards still occupy the largest share of land, around 70 000 decares, followed by plum and damson orchards with around 58 000 decares, apple orchards with 46 210 decares, peaches with 41 000 decares, etc, according to farmer.bg.

Bulgaria's Southeastern Region has the largest percentage of orchard area and is mostly planted with cherry and peach trees.

Next is the Southern Central Region, which has the biggest number of apple, plum and cherry orchards.

In Bulgaria's North Central Region, mostly apricot orchards are grown.

Bulgaria harvests around 123 000 tonnes of fruit annually.

Apart from the traditional apples, pears, plums, apricots, cherries and peaches, the statistics also takes into account walnut orchards, which also occupy a significant area.

Of the young plantations, walnuts have the biggest share of around 30%, followed by plum orchards with 20%, cherries with 18.3%, apples with 10.7%, peaches with 6.8%, apricots with 7.3%.

Farmers predict that imported fruit will continue to dominate the market in Bulgaria for at least 10 years because of the declining share of orchard area and the small harvest which cannot satisfy demand.
