French politician Jean-Christophe Cambadelis, Vice President of the Party of European Socialists (PES), has asked PES leader, Bulgarian Sergey Stanishev, for "clarification" about reported affiliation with extremists.

The information was reported by the French "Le Nouvel Observateur," according to which, Cambadelis was wondering and wanted information why the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, also led by Stanishev, is in alliance with the far-right nationalist Ataka party of Volen Siderov.

At the end of September, "Le Nouvel Observateur" revealed the information about the political alliance and wrote it has been one of the reasons for the relentless, months-long antigovernment protests in Bulgaria.

The September article has been prompted by a letter, sent to Cambadelis from organizations of the Bulgarian civil society, which have demanded Stanishev's resignation from the PES leadership, over the alliance with a far-right party.

"We are waiting for clarification," a source from PES, close to Cambadelis, told "Nouvel Observateur."

The source has also informed that the French politician has been confused by information in the letter and grateful to the media for helping him discover the scandal in Bulgaria."
